A young man walks toward an open A.A. meeting door as a member holds out a cup of coffee

Young People’s Chair

A.A. is for anyone who wants to stop drinking, whatever their age. More and more people are finding A.A. in their teens and twenties, before drinking costs them more. The Young People’s Chair helps carry that message to young people in Lewis County.

What young members say

  • “I’m too young.” Members who got sober as teenagers found they had the same problem as everyone else in the room. Age doesn’t decide it.
  • “It isn’t that bad.” Drinking problems usually get worse over time. You don’t have to wait for rock bottom.
  • “Sober sounds boring.” Young members say life got more fun, without the hangovers and the trouble.
  • “What about my friends?” Some old friendships change. Many find real friends in A.A., especially at young people’s meetings and events.
  • “Forever?” Nobody has to quit forever. A.A. works one day at a time.

What helped them

  • Going to meetings often, especially at first.
  • Getting a sponsor and working the Twelve Steps.
  • Using the phone numbers other members share.
  • Finding young people’s meetings and YPAA events.
  • Getting involved in service.
